Aberdeenshire
This section is mainly of the sights involving the hill range of Bennachie, which being just 2 minutes drive from our home in Oyne is a favourite place of mine for a quick walk, or the Cairngorms. Click on the images to view a full size photo.
The Cairngorm range got an early pasing of snow in October 2008. This panaramic shot was taken from the summit of Lochnagar, and takes in most of the Southern Cairngorms including Devil's Peak, Cairn Toul, Ben MacDui and Ben a'Bhuird.
Loch Callater sits at the head of a glen just to the South of Braemar. It is the culmination of a Right of Way known as Jock's Road which leads North from the Angus Glens. Nearby Coire Kander is a Site of Scientific Interest for the huge amount of flora and fauna to be found there.
Craigshannoch is one of the many summits to be found on Bennachie. It sits between the highest peak Oxen Craig, and the more prominent Mither Tap. The hill is listed as Marilyn - a hill of at least 150 metres. This photo was taken from near Kirkton of Oyne on a snowy winter day.
Glen Derry is reached from the Linn of Dee, and leads into the leser known pass of the Lairig an Laoigh (Pass of the Calves). It is surrounded on both sides by a number of Munros, and gives some of the best views of these hills for vry little effort.
The Howe of Alford is seen here from the summit of Oxen Craig on Bennachie. Alford lies next to the River Don, and is hom to the world famous Aberdeen Angus breed of cattle.
Lochnagar is famous as The Hill of Royal Deeside. Climbing high above Balmoral Castle, the hill offers everything for walkers and climbers, with its spectacular Northern Coire leading up to a long undulating ridge walk with great views to all aspects of the compass.
The Mither Tap is the most prominent peak of the Bennachie range, with most loval kids convinced it isa dormant volcano lying in wait of their footsteps to explode!
Remnants of the old Caledonian Pine Forest can still be seen around the Linn of Quoich, with some great old Scot's Pines in evidence. These trees cast some great shadows on a mid summer camping trip.
Snow can be deceptive in depth, and this drift was no different as I landed flat on my face...
Teasals are a strange looking plant, but were set of by this vivid pink sunset.
