Redpoint Coastal
Start: End of B8056 Gairloch - Redpoint road
Description: Walk around rocky coastline between two sandy beaches.
OS Map: #19, Gairloch & Ullapool
Multimap: Online Map
This walk links the two beaches at Redpoint together with a walk around the rocky windswept coast of the point itself. It's reached by heading South from Gairloch for about 2 miles, and turning right into the road signposted for Shieldaig, Badachro and Redpoint, and following it for approximately 9 miles to it's end. Just before the end of the road, a viewpoint from the highpoint looks out to Skye and the Hebrides.
Take the right hand gate out the end of the car park, and follow the grassy worn path down through the sand dunes to the beach.Straight out from here views take in Skye, Harris and Lewis. Up to the North, one of the small cottages is owned by Jamiroquai frontman Jay-Kay.
Head for the stream at the South end of the beach. Splash your way across and climb up onto the heather above the rocks. Pick up a small path and follow it through the rocks and over the stile. The path curves along the top of the rocks, over a number of rocky inlets. Watch out for Dolphins, Otters and numerous sea-birds in and around the water. Further out there's a good chance of spotting a submarine on exercise.
On reaching the extremity of the point, the path curves inland, following Loch Torridon. Ahead are the giant Munro's of Torridon - Liathach and Beinn Alligin - and the striking Shieldaig Forest hills of Baosbheinn and Beinn an Eoin. The path eventually cuts North, before opening out onto the second beach. Drop down the grassy slopes towards the beach, gaining the sand by the old boat winch. Follow the sand along to the old Fishing cottages at the far end.
After exploring around the cottages, pick up the land rover track heading North-West back towards the car park. Pass through Redpoint Farm, leaving any gates as you find them, and back up the track to the car park.
