Victoria Falls
Start: A832 Kinlochewe - Gairloch road
Description: Very short walk to waterfall
OS Map: #19, Gairloch & Ullapool
Multimap: Online Map
A lovely walk through conifers to excellent waterfalls in the Slattadale Forest. Although it can be muddy after heavy rain, the path is well made, and only a short distance of a few hundred metres from the car park - the falls can be fleetingly seen you drive along the Kinlochewe - Gairloch road by Loch Maree.
The way is clearly marked up to the falls, on a quiet day you can hear them from the moment you open the car door, and is a gentle walk suitable for anyone, however young or old, except those with plenty energy may have to make the walk a few times just to use up some of that energy!
These waterfalls are named after Queen Victoria, who visited them in 1877. The story goes that, the local hotelier wanted something "impressive" for the Queen, and knowing of a small local waterfall, sent men up the hillside, to split the stream that fed Loch Bad An Sgalaig to the North, so that half the water descended down the Victoria Falls.
Just across the A832 is the Forestry Commission's Slattadale site, where there is a car park and picnic area. This is a delightful place for a picnic, looking down Loch Maree with Slioch in the distance. From here you can walk along the shores of Loch Maree northward to Tollaidh Farm, on the road between Gairloch and Poolewe, by following the path along the banks of Loch Maree.
